Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago
The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is a museum that has the urban residents in mind! However, anyone from any place in the world will enjoy this museum. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum has been open since 1999, so it is still a rather new museum compared to the other museum in Chicago. The main feature of this museum is to educate the public on how to take care of the nature in the Chicago area. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is really big on maintaining the cities natural beauty. The museum is located at 2430 N. Cannon Drive and the phone number is 773-755-5100. Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. General Admission for adults is $7, for students/seniors $5 and children from ages 3-12 $4. The parking is kind of expensive, $22 for the day, but if you truly make a day out of hanging out downtown, I would say it is worth it. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is so serious about living an eco friendly lifestyle. The museum's building is eco friendly. To keep the 17,000 square foot rooftop garden flourishing the museum uses water conservation and solar power. The reason for having a rooftop garden is that it helps to insulate the building. The museum is also huge on recycling. If you or your children have ever wondered how the waterways work in Chicago, the one exhibit to participate in is the "River Works" exhibit. This will give you a general idea of how the waterways work and how to protect them. Now, if you love butterflies I recommend going to check out the "Butterfly Haven". The Butterfly Haven is majestic, with over 75 different species of butterflies to see! The Butterfly Haven will be such a beautiful experience. The kid will love the "Extreme Green House"; everything in there is set up with environmentally safe equipment. These exhibits are the ones that are permanent and that you can see any time in the year. However, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum has several exhibits that get changed out or changed around every couple of months. Every Memorial Day weekend Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum has a special program/slash exhibit that is fun and appropriate for the whole family to enjoy. For more information on that please see their website. One year they featured the, "Ice Age Mammals and Prehistoric Beasts" a fun filled show that presents what prehistoric life was like.
